Airline FMS Reaches Owner Operators

Flight Management Systems (FMS) have been around for a long time. Originally reserved for the airlines, they’ve progressively been expanded to private and corporate general aviation aircraft.

FMS’s like the Universal UNS-1 or Pro Line 4 have allowed pilots to generate flight plans and link navigation and communication instruments together in reliable fashion. And yet, there were still many growing pains and rigidity in the execution of these early FMS’s.

Rockwell Collins changed the flight deck experience with the 2007 release of Pro Line 21 Integrated Avionics System. The robustness, fast response, and clean/elegant display of information met the 21st century and started to grace popular aircraft such as the CitationJet series.

What Pro Line 21 Offers the Modern Pilot

With the advance of glass cockpits, LCD displays — Pro Line 21 takes advantage of these shifts to improve the user experience and enhance situational awareness (SA).

Features like fully coupled VNAV, RNP integration, and customizable displays allow pilots flying high performance aircraft effective tools and greater safety margins.

SA features like FMS Chartlink™ allow pilots to switch flight plans and receive almost instant updates to charts and plates to handle ATC changes. Charts are loaded effortlessly and can reduce the amount of head-down time and workload for the crew.

Another upgrade from earlier FMS’s is the availability of XM Satellite Weather. While only covering the contiguous 48 states, learn in our Pro Line 21 training the robust weather tool gives pilots graphical weather in color format displaying data from NEXRAD, METARs, Winds Aloft, Lightning, Turbulence, Icing and SIGMETs.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Rich Pickett Personal Wings

Rich Pickett

With 14,000+ hours of piloting more than 100 aircraft models, Rich Pickett is still passionate about flying. Rich holds an ATP, CFII SME, SES, glider license, and type ratings in the following aircraft: L29, L39, Citation 500/510/525, Eclipse 500S, Beechcraft Premier and Dassault Falcon 10. He runs his company, Personal Wings, with his son Tigre. Personal Wings provides training, mentoring and aircraft services.

Why Train Pro Line 21 With Personal Wings

Real cockpit, real flights. Every lesson is filmed using actual Collins Pro Line 21 installations in the aircraft, not desktop FMS trainers or PowerPoint slides. You see exactly what you will see in your own flight deck.

Instructor credentials that matter. Rich Pickett holds type ratings in the Citation 500, 510, and 525 series. He has flown and taught Pro Line 21 for over a decade across multiple airframes. This is not a generic CBT built by a courseware company.

Lifetime access, no license expiration. Other providers limit you to 180 days. Our course is yours forever. Come back before every flight, every annual recurrent, every insurance renewal.

Complete operational coverage. From cold-dark cockpit startup through FMS programming, departure, cruise, approach, and shutdown. Module 8 is a full 46-minute flight demonstrating every system in real-time sequence.

Who This Collins Pro Line 21 Course Is For

Citation CJ1+, CJ2+, CJ3, and CJ4 owner-operators who want to understand every function of their avionics suite, not just the basics covered in type rating ground school.

Contract and corporate pilots transitioning to Pro Line 21 equipped aircraft who need to build proficiency before their first flight.

Pilots preparing for insurance-required training who want to arrive at their in-person session already fluent in the FMS, CDU, and display systems.

Recurrent training pilots looking to sharpen specific skills like VNAV programming, complex flight planning, or weather radar interpretation without scheduling a full training event.

Beechcraft Premier 1A operators flying with Pro Line 21 installations who need avionics-specific training outside of airframe-focused programs.

What Pilots Are Saying

“Rich has taught me to fly a Cirrus, Meridian, Citation Mustang, and trained me on the Rockwell Pro Line Fusion for my CJ3. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable — he’s a lot of fun. I’ve become the pilot I am because of Rich.”

— Horacio V.
Citation CJ3 Owner

“Rich has a wealth of information I tap into regularly — and I've been flying for more than 50 years. Highly intelligent, patient, and a pleasure to work with. We've flown 150+ hours together, including across the Atlantic and through Europe. I recommend him highly.”

— Michael Herman
Master Pilot | NBAA Tech Committee

“Rich guided me through every transition — Piper Mirage, Meridian, Citation Mustang — including avionics at every step. After a recent sim event, the instructor said he wanted to shake my primary instructor's hand based on my flying.”

— Jonathan Lampitt
President & CEO, CVG Properties

“Rich takes away the normal jitters of a test and his ground work before flight is a great refresher. I’ve been flying for over 30 years — not only do I continue to learn each year with Rich, I actually look forward to it.”

— John Obradovich, Malibu Owner

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Collins Pro Line 21 online training course — access, content, compatible aircraft, and what to expect before you enroll.

How long do I have access once I purchase?
Forever. Unlike other aviation training providers that expire your access after 180 days, your purchase never expires. Come back before your annual recurrent, your insurance renewal, or anytime you want a refresher on a specific system. One purchase, lifetime access.
How much video content is included?
The course includes 22 video lessons totaling 3+ hours of focused, cockpit-based instruction — all filmed in actual Pro Line 21 installations, not desktop simulators or slide presentations. Module 8 alone is a 46-minute complete flight from KNYL to KPHX demonstrating every system in real-time sequence.
Can I preview a sample lesson before purchasing?
Yes — the first lesson of the course is available to preview for free before you enroll. Click here to watch the free preview lesson.
Which aircraft is this course compatible with?
The course is built specifically for Citation CJ1+, CJ2+, CJ3, and CJ4 pilots and is also directly applicable to Beechcraft Premier 1A operators and any other aircraft equipped with the Collins Pro Line 21 integrated avionics system. FMS-3000 operations are consistent across all these platforms.
Does this course cover the Collins FMS-3000?
Yes — the FMS-3000 is the Flight Management System at the core of the Pro Line 21 suite, and it is covered throughout the course. “Collins 3000” and “FMS-3000” refer to the same system. Topics include flight plan initialization, CDU operations, VNAV descent planning, crossing restrictions, holding patterns, Direct-To functions, and departure/arrival management.
Can I access the course on multiple devices?
Yes. The course is hosted online, which allows access from any wifi/cell-service connected browser-enabled device — iPad, laptop, phone, or desktop — with a single login. No device restrictions.
Does this count toward recurrent or insurance-required training?
This course is a structured self-study supplement, not a formal Part 61 or Part 142 ground school. It does not replace required recurrent training events or type rating ground school. However, many students use it to arrive at those events already fluent in the FMS and CDU — which often shortens the in-person portion and demonstrates proficiency to the sim instructor. Check with your insurance provider or training center regarding specific credit.
Are there discounts for flight schools, operators, or professional organizations?
We are actively developing group licensing options and discount codes for organizations including NAFI, NBAA, and Part 135 operators. If you represent a fleet operator, training organization, or professional group and want to discuss volume pricing, a demo, or an operator package, contact us here.
When does Module 6 (Departures & Cruise) launch?
Module 6 is in production now. The lesson content is fully written and videos are being recorded — covering departure programming and SID review, VNAV climb management, and enroute FMS operations from wheels-up to cruise altitude. All enrolled students will receive access automatically when it launches, at no additional cost.
